The rules

Front gardens and drainage.

You don't need planning permission for a new or replacement driveway of any size if it uses a permeable surface — or directs rainwater to a lawn or border to soak away. If you cover more than 5 m² of front garden with an impermeable surface that drains to the road, you'll need planning permission.

A new dropped kerb needs separate permission from your highways authority.

FAQs

Questions we're often asked

How deep should a driveway be dug?

It depends on the ground and the surface, but a proper sub-base for a car-bearing driveway is typically much deeper than a patio. We excavate and compact to suit your ground.

Is block paving permeable?

Permeable block paving is — standard block paving laid on a sealed base isn't. We'll specify the right system so you stay within the rules.

Can you arrange a dropped kerb?

We can help you apply to the council and coordinate the work with your driveway.
